A Little Family History
In 1657 our ancestor Steven Coerte brought his family over to New Amsterdam. For those of you who do not know New Amsterdam is actually New York. The family settled in what is now Flatlands, Brooklyn, NY. The Van Voorhees families make up the largest Dutch family in the United States. The names include: Van Voorhees, Voorhees, Van Voorhies, Voorhies, Van Vorhies, Vorhies, Van Voorhis, Voorhis, Voorheas, Voorhease, Voorheese, Voorheez, Voorheis, Voorhes, Voorhies, Vorhees, Voorhis, Vorhes, Van Voris, Voris, Vooris, Voress, Vorys, Vorhis, Voris, Vories, Voreese, Vores, Vorheis, Vorres, Van Vorous, Vorous, Voras, Voorus, Van Voorkiss, Vource, Vorce
Steven Coerte b. 1599/1600 Married Aaltjen Wessels b. 1605 in 1625. They had a total of 4 children: Coert, Wessel, Marchien, & Hendrickje. Steven Coerte also married Willemtje Roelofs Seuberinge in 1648/1649. They had 6 children: Lucas, Jan, Albert, Aeltje, Jannetje, & Hendrickje.
Coert Van Voorhees b. 1638 married Marretje Gerritse Van Couvenhoven b. April 10, 1644 in 1664. I don't remember how many children they had, but I know that we are descended from Coert twice. I'll explain in a few generations.
Cornelis Van Voohees b. June 23, 1678 married Antje Rapalye b. March 17, 1681 in 1696.
Daniel Van Voorhees b. December 17, 1701 married Femmetje Bennet b April 24, 1706 on November 27, 1724.
Abraham Van Voorhees b. November 6, 1751 married Marretje Philips b. November 30, 1763 in 1782. Marretje is the daughter of Roelof Philips & Barbra Van Voorhis , the daughter of Geertje Vanbunschouten & Johannes Van Voorhis, the son of Barbara Vandyck & Johannes Van Voorhis,Marretje Van Couvenhoven & Coert Van Voorhees. So yes Abraham married his own cousin.
Peter Van Voorhis b. September 9, 1795 married Margaret Sickman b. February 19, 1805 on January 29, 1822.
Abrham Van Voorhis born December 12, 1822 married Elizabeth Engle b. July 26, 1821 on December 8, 1842.
Cyrus Van Voorhis b. December 9, 1848 married Ellen Judd b. June of 1852 on March 10, 1870.
Olive Van Voorhis b. September 1, 1878 married Robert J (Warren) Griffith b. March 6, 1875 on December 22, 1898.
Ralph W Griffith b. May 8, 1904 married Mildred Sybella Kidd b. May 5, 1906 on December 4, 1923.

Today as a family we said goodbye to a good woman. Rick & Erma may not have had the most expensive houses or cars, but they had each other & their love & that is what really matters. Family is the most important thing in the whole entire world. It doesn't matter if you have everything money can buy because without family it's just meaningless clutter.
